Vacationing in Greensboro - Day One

Melissa's parents are visiting with us this week, and, rather than spend half of their vacation driving around the South, we decided to visit some parts of the greater Triad area that we hadn't visited before.  We decided to start close to home, beginning with the Old Mill of Guilford.
Although you can see the grinding wheels used at the mill, and get an explanation of how they work from one of the friendly operators, we spent most of our time in the small shop attached to the mill.  The shop sells a surprising variety of flours and meals based on corn, wheat, and oat.  They also offer a limited number of historical books featuring both local and regional history.

Once we finished looking around the shop, we went outside to see the grounds surrounding the shop.  I was surprised to discover that the water wheel appeared to be missing.  There is a small area down by the creek which was quite lovely, and we took several photos by the water.  There wasn't much else to do at the mill, so after a brief stop by the house, we moved on to Ed McKay's bookstore.

After finishing up at Ed McKay's, we went over to view the Guilford Courthouse Battlefield.  I'd felt a bit guilty about the fact that we'd lived in Greensboro for over six years but hadn't been to see the battlefield.  There is a self-guided driving tour around the park, and we went through the entire park in about 30 minutes.  We did make a few quick stops.  At one of the monuments, we found some of the largest trees we've seen in a long time.  Melissa is near the base of the tree just to give you a sense of scale.

We also had good fun making fun of the general Greensboro is named for, as well as two of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

We finished the day by celebrating our seventh wedding anniversary at Leblon Brazilian Steakhouse.  After eating our fill of garlic sirloin, bacon-wrapped fillet, and at least a half-dozen other meats, we returned to the house to catch up on some television and get a good night's sleep.
